Energy Deregulation in Kansas
Deregulated energy services: Only natural gas (consumers using 800-1,500 MCF/year).
Deregulates service territories: Kansas Gas Service.
Natural gas is deregulated in Kansas, but provider choice is only available for consumers who meet the two following conditions:
- Being in the Kansas Gas Service (KGS) utility territory.
- Having a gas consumption between 800 and 1,500 MCF (thousand cubic feet) per year.
For reference, the average US home consumes around 60-70 MCF per year. In other words, the minimum gas consumption to qualify for provider choice in Kansas is over 10 times higher than the typical home consumption.
Kansas produces more natural gas than it consumes, making the state a net exporter. There are 16 underground gas storage fields in the Sunflower State according to the US EIA, with a combined capacity of 283 billion cubic feet and representing 3% US storage capacity. Around 60%of Kansasā homes use natural gas heating, and they represent 25% of state consumption.
Gas-fired generation is relatively low in Kansas, representing only 5% of the power mix. The three main electricity sources in the state are wind (45%), coal (33%) and nuclear energy (15%).
