Nebraska Energy Deregulation

Energy Deregulation in Nebraska

Deregulated energy services: Only natural gas.

Deregulated gas service territories: Black Hills Energy

Natural gas has been deregulated since 1998 in Nebraska. However, switching to another gas provider at any time is not possible; there is a two-week period in April where you can choose your provider and must remain with them until the following year.

  • In 2022, Nebraskans could choose their gas provider between April 1 and April 21.
  • The new gas prices and provider changes took effect on June 1.

Black Hills Energy is in charge of natural gas lines and meters regardless of your chosen provider. Gas consumers who do not choose a provider during the two-week period in April are automatically reassigned to their current gas supplier, and prices are updated accordingly.

During the two-week opportunity window in April, you can also choose a gas provider for several years. You may get better pricing with this option, and your gas supply will quote prices for the entire contract duration (instead of a single year). However, you do not have the option of switching to another provider until the contract ends.
