Natural Gas Choices in Wyoming

Energy Deregulation in Wyoming

Deregulated energy services: Only natural gas (limited participation).

Deregulated gas service territories: Black Hills Energy.

Although Wyoming deregulated its natural gas industry in 1996, market participation remains low. Gas provider choice is available, but subject to the following restrictions:

  • Only consumers in the Black Hills Energy service territory can choose their gas provider.
  • Consumers can only switch to other providers once per year, during a 3-week period in April. Some gas providers may offer better prices if you sign up for more than 12 months.

Wyoming is a net energy exporter, producing 13 times more energy that it consumes, according to the US EIA. Of the 100 largest natural gas fields in the US, 16 are located in Wyoming. The state also has nine underground gas storage sites with a combined capacity of 156 billion cubic feet, which is 1.7% of total US capacity.

Around 60% of homes use natural gas for space heating in Wyoming, but its use in the electric power sector is relatively low. 73% of electricity is generated from coal, 19% is generated from wind energy, and the remaining 8% comes from natural gas and hydroelectricity.
