An Update on Direct Energy in Texas
January 5, 2021 NRG Energy acquired Direct Energy and it’s sister company, First Choice Power. NRG is a leading power company with operations in all US deregulated energy states, including Texas. The NRG brand portfolio includes Reliant Energy, Green Mountain Energy, Xoom Energy, Cirro Energy, Stream and Discount Power.
In October of 2021, all three million Direct Electricity customers became clients of NRG. Current customers were transferred automatically, so we strongly advise all Direct Energy customers to review your current electricity contract terms at this time.
How to Cancel Direct Energy
In Texas, you do not have to notify Direct Energy that you are cancelling their services. Simply choose another company and when you are switched by the TDU, Direct Energy will be notified. If you have an outstanding balance with Direct electricity division, you will be billed accordingly, or in some cases, placed on a switch hold. A switch hold means that you can’t jump to another electric company until your previous power bill is paid.
Prepaid Power to Go – Pay Direct By Phone or Online
At this time, Direct Energy does not offer pay as you go electric service. For power-to-go, or prepaid light service, we recommend Payless Power, the leading prepaid energy provider in Texas since 2005. New Payless prepaid customers can choose autopay and get a great discount on home energy.
