Rhythm Energy can lock your price for 6, 12 or 24 months. One of their recent 12-month plans comes with $100 in EVgo charging credits and their 24-month plans come with a camera and home security system.

Who Benefits for Rhythm Energy Seasonal Plans?

The PowerShift Seasonal 12 plan is ideal for homeowners who have flexible energy consumption habits. This plan is beneficial if you can shift your consumption towards off-peak hours, away from on-peak and seasonal peak hours.

  • You can reduce your power bill if you have the flexibility to cut your electricity consumption between 6PM and 10PM, and also between 6AM and 9AM during winter.
  • Note that your power bill can increase if you have a high consumption during the on-peak schedule and you don’t have the flexibility to shift your energy usage.

The PowerShift EV Seasonal 12 plan offers an even lower tariff between 12AM and 6AM. This plan is only available for electric vehicle owners, but you can also use the overnight tariff to power other devices such as space heaters and air conditioners. The recommendation given for the regular version of the PowerShift 12 plan also applies here: only choose this plan if you can cut back your energy consumption during the on-peak hours.

Rhythm Energy’s Past Solar Buyback Plans

As you might guess, these electricity plans are ideal for homeowners with solar panels. You can sell surplus production from your solar panels to Rhythm Energy, and the corresponding credit is subtracted from your monthly bill.

Note that the TDU charge is only applied when you use energy from the grid, not when you are exporting electricity to the grid.

Oncor Service Territory Pricing Example:

Oncor adds a fixed charge of $4.23/month plus a delivery charge of 5.034 cents/kWh, regardless of the energy plan you choose.

Energy Plan Fixed Charges Energy Charges Additional Benefits
Texas Solar Buyback 12 $9.95/month plus fixed TDU charge 15.474 cents/kWh plus TDU delivery charge 10.20 cents/kWh solar buyback tariff
Solar Buyback Select 12 $9.95/month plus fixed TDU charge 9.472 cents/kWh plus TDU delivery charge 2.40 cents/kWh solar buyback tariff

CenterPoint Service Territory Pricing Example

CenterPoint adds a fixed charge of $4.39/month plus a delivery charge of 5.469 cents/kWh, regardless of the energy plan you choose.

Energy Plan Fixed Charges Energy Charges Additional Benefits
Texas Solar Buyback 12 $9.95/month plus fixed TDU charge 15.888 cents/kWh plus TDU delivery charge 10.50 cents/kWh solar buyback tariff
Solar Buyback Select 12 $9.95/month plus fixed TDU charge 10.051 cents/kWh plus TDU delivery charge 2.50 cents/kWh solar buyback tariff

Who Benefits for Rhythm Energy Solar Buyback Plans?

As you can see in the table, the Texas Solar Buyback 12 Plan pays you more for excess solar energy, but it also charges you more when you are using the grid. The Solar Buyback Select 12 Plan charges you a cheaper tariff when using the grid, but the buyback tariff for excess solar energy is very low.

  • The Texas Solar Buyback 12 Plan is recommended for solar panel owners with overproduction, who can benefit from the higher solar buyback price.
  • The Solar Buyback Select 12 Plan is recommended for solar panel owners who consume most of their energy directly, without sending large amounts of excess production to the grid. These users can benefit from the lower energy charge when they are not using solar energy.

As a quick example, assume that two homeowners have the same grid consumption, but one of them has a much larger solar system with excess production.

  • Homeowner 1 = 500 kWh grid consumption, 800 kWh of excess solar production
  • Homeowner 2 = 500 kWh grid consumption, 50 kWh of excess solar production

To compare both cases, we will consider the electric tariffs and solar buyback prices applied by Rhythm Energy in the Oncor service territory.

Here are the expected energy costs for Homeowner 1, under both solar buyback plans:

Energy Plan Energy Costs

(Including TDU Fees)

Solar Buyback Net Energy Costs
Texas Solar Buyback 12 Plan $102.54 (500 kWh) $81.60 (800 kWh) $20.94 (Best Option)
Solar Buyback Select 12 Plan $72.53 (500 kWh) $19.20 (800 kWh) $53.33

Here are the expected energy costs for Homeowner 2:

Energy Plan Energy Costs

(Including TDU Fees)

Solar Buyback Net Energy Costs
Texas Solar Buyback 12 Plan $102.54 (500 kWh) $5.10 (50 kWh) $97.44
Solar Buyback Select 12 Plan $72.53 (500 kWh) $1.20 (50 kWh) $71.33 (Best Option)

In this example, Homeowner 1 (net exporter) benefits from the Texas Solar Buyback 12 Plan, while Homeowner 2 (net consumer) benefits from the Solar Buyback Select 12 Plan.

This comparison does not consider the fixed monthly charges. They don’t affect the decision because they are equivalent in both solar buyback plans: a $9.95/month Rhythm Energy fee plus $4.23/month Oncor fee.
