8 Easy Ways to Keep Your Dog Cool This Summer

Summer can be a challenging time for dogs, especially those with thick fur coats. As pet owners, it’s our responsibility to keep our best friends safe from the grueling heat. Here are 10 simple, but important ways to keep your furry pal cool during the hot summer months:

  1. Provide Extra Water: Just like humans need more water during a hot summer, so do dogs. It’s important to ensure your dog has access to fresh water at all times to maintain their health and prevent dehydration.
  2. Buy a Pet Water Fountain: A water fountain can provide a continuous flow of fresh water for your dog. It also helps to keep the water clean and free from dirt and debris. This makes your pet want to drink more.
  3. Add Ice Cubes: During hot weather, adding ice cubes to your dog’s water bowl can help keep the water cool and refreshing. Just make sure not to add too many as it may cause your dog to drink too quickly and potentially lead to stomach upset.
  4. Try Wet Food: Adding water to your dog’s wet food can help keep them hydrated while also providing them with a tasty meal.

5. Exercise During Cooler Times: Avoid walking your dog during the hottest parts of the day. Instead, take walks in the early morning or late evening when it’s cooler outside. Make sure to bring a water bottle and collapsible bowl on walks or hikes to provide your dog with fresh water during breaks.

6. Provide Plenty of Shade: Set up a shaded area in your yard where your dog can rest and cool off. This could be under a tree or a canopy. Fill up a kiddie pool for bigger dogs.

7. Use Dog Cooling Products: There are several cooling products available for dogs, such as cooling mats, vests, and bandanas. These products can help regulate your dog’s body temperature.

8. Never Leave Your Dog in a Hot Car: Even with the windows cracked, a car can quickly become too hot for a dog to handle. If you need to run errands, leave your dog at home where it’s safe and cool.

Remember, the extreme summer heat is just as miserable for your dogs. If possible, let your pup stay inside and enjoy the air conditioning and never leave Fido alone outside without shade and plenty of water.
