  • Who do I call if my power goes out?

In the event of an Oncor power outage or to report a downed power line, please file a report online with Oncor Dallas. Another handy tool is the Oncor Outage Map. Here you can see exactly where storms lie and where power has gone out and been restored.

  • What’s the difference between Oncor and TXU or Direct Energy?

Getting electricity in Texas can be confusing. Oncor is a TDU, or Transmission and Delivery Utility company, which means they deliver the power from the grid to your home. You do not call Oncor to switch electric providers or review plans. In this instance, you need to choose a Texas energy company, or Retail Electric Providers (REPs).

TXU, Reliant and Direct Energy are REPs, or Retail Electricity Providers. Texas electric companies determine the rate per kWh, market the sale of electricity, monitor customer usage and deliver light bills.

  • What’s the difference between a fixed and variable electric rate?

When comparing electric rate plans in Texas you can choose whether or not you want a fixed or variable price. A fixed rate stays the same throughout your term, and a variable rate can change due to seasonal changes and fluctuations in the electric wholesale market. Going with a variable rate can mean potentially cheaper electricity in the long run, while a fixed rate plan offers price security regardless of market volatility.
